At Twitch, I was the lead designer on Twitch Studio, a free streaming software designed for new streamers.
Twitch Studio was in open beta, and the team was busy pumping out features to meet our users’ needs and expectations.
My responsibilities at Twitch included the full product design process for Twitch Studio:
Ideation and needfinding
Planning and conducting UXR sessions, and compiling insights into a report
Clear communication and collaboration with PM and engineering managers to set and understand MVP priorities
UX flow explorations and UI design iterations on biweekly sprint cadence leading to VP design approval
Pre-launch design QA and support with engineering and product
GTM support and asset creation for marketing
Twitch Studio KPIs have grew tremendously while I was on the team:
1.1M to 7.8M total installs (+709%)
3.7M to 44M total hours broadcast (+1189%)
609k to 4.1M total unique streamers (+673%)
253k to 467k MAUs (+184%)
Here’s an overview of some of the smaller scoped features and quality of life (QoL) improvements I’ve led and launched. I owned all of the following projects entirely from ideation to launch.
Changelog
There wasn’t a good way to communicate to users about new features and updates outside of email notifications, so we created an in-app changelog, similar to patch notes in popular games. Includes logic to only appear first time a user sees a new update.
Layer snapping
Imagine trying to line-up assets in your scene to pixel perfection without snapping. Yeah, super frustrating.
Copy, paste, and duplicate
Imagine not being able to copy paste in an editing software. Yeah, I couldn’t either. One of the first features I shipped.
Layer folders
Since a scene can get complicated with multiple layers, it’s a nice QoL improvement to be able to group layers together so you don’t need to drag/drop multiple layers individually.
Linked layers
Similar to symbols in Sketch or components in Figma - create linked or shared instances of a layer that can persist across mulitple scenes. Great from both a UX perspective and an engineering performance perspective.
Importing scenes
To facilitate an easier transition for creators coming from other streaming software to Studio, we launched a Scene Importer to provide 1:1 layer transfer.
Countdown timer
A widget that allows creators to time events, such as a “Starting Soon” scene.
Help center
Previously users would have to google everything if they had a question. Built out an in-app help center to guide questions and house in-app tutorials.
